Supported Canon DSLR Cameras

Canon DSLRs are a good choice for a photobooth. Obviously they take excellent pictures, and very reliable, and you can connect an external flash. But not all DSLRs are created equal, since not all DSLRs offer a live preview, meaning your customers will be able to see themselves before the picture is taken with only some Canon DSLRs.

Note that the Rebel XS, which also goes by the model name 1000D, does not auto focus during the live preview. That's a huge problem for a photobooth, since it means that if people will be out of focus if they change their distance from the camera. For this reason we recommend the T2i, also known as the 550D over the XS.

Here's a list of DSLRs that support Live Preview:

  • Canon EOS 20Da
  • Canon EOS 40D
  • Canon EOS 50D
  • Canon EOS 450D aka Rebel XSi
  • Canon EOS 500D aka Rebel T1i
  • Canon EOS 550D aka Rebel T2i
  • Canon EOS 600D aka Rebel T3i
  • Canon EOS 550D aka Rebel T3
  • Canon EOS 1000D aka Rebel XS (WARNING: no auto focus!)
  • Canon EOS 1D Mark III
  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III
  • Canon EOS 1D Mark IV
  • Canon EOS 5D Mark II
  • Canon EOS 7D

In addition to the above, Photoboof works with the following models, although these cameras don't support Live Preview. But note that as of Photoboof v6.934 you can use a webcam for your live preview with these cameras:

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II
  • Canon EOS 1D Mark II
  • Canon EOS 1DS Mark II (no Vista support)
  • Canon EOS 30D
  • Canon EOS 20D
  • Canon EOS 10D (no Vista support)
  • Canon EOS 400D (aka XTi)
  • Canon EOS 350D (no Vista support)
  • Canon EOS 300D (no Vista support)

The following models are supported under Windows XP but not Vista 32-bit:

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark I
  • Canon EOS 1D Mark I
  • Canon EOS 10D
  • Canon EOS 300D

The following older models do not support remote capture and therefore do not work with Photoboof:

  • Canon EOS D60
  • Canon EOS D30

Note that Canon cameras don't support 64-bit versions of Windows Vista or XP, so none of the above will work under Windows Vista 64-bit. But Windows Vista 32-bit is fine. And Windows 7, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, should work fine.

If you're buying a new Canon DSLR for your photobooth, I recommend the 500D, also known as the T1i. It has excellent live preview, auto focuses well, is relatively inexpensive, and is generally a great camera for a photobooth. You might also have a look at the supported Powershots.

Please let us know if you have any problems or suggestions.
